Nawroz & Annie

I met Nawroz through my friend Tom, who is a musician. I was completing an MA in Photography and was interested in photographing the singers of a refugee choir. Tom introduced me to Nawroz so that I could interview and photograph him as part of my MA project, which was initially about racism. Right from the start, I found his voice fascinating, so strong and intense, as if your life depended on it. His life path was equally fascinating but harrowing at the same time. He was threatened for singing against Saddam Hussein. He was a singer for the freedom fighters of Kurdistan. He was arrested and tortured and came as a refugee in England. He worked as a translator with the British troops during the war in Iraq… His current fight is against depression. Singing is everything to him: his life, his passion, his fun and his love.

May his voice resonate for many more years.
