Reflections on Racism Photo Project

For someone who's lived a life of white, male priviledge, it can be difficult gain a sense of the world through someone else's experience. Your images and quotes from your interviewees however absolutely worked to take me there. The comments about having to have 'the talk' and the four images of clasped hands (I think it was Clarissa), were really powerful and offered real insight into what your interviewees feel. They pulled me up short and made me think about my place in society and what, as individuals, we can do to create an open and equal day-to-day existence.

Documentary

We asked Annie to document our protest march to the headquarter of the European Medicines Agency in London in April 2016 and to the German Ministry of Health in Berlin in January 2017. As we are affected by a rare genetic condition called “erythropoietic protoporphyria”, we have to be protected by cloth and umbrellas against every ray of visible light - it must have been a real challenge for her to make the pictures! However, her photos were very insightful and captured the atmosphere and the emotions extraordinarily good. She not only made pictures but wanted to know as much as possible about the difficulties the patients face in their daily life and about their constant fight for light and against the authorities, which are withholding a life changing treatment. Thank you Annie for your commitment – hopefully the next time we meet it will be out in the bright sunshine, under better light conditions for us as well as the photographer :-)

Portraits

Annie has a very inquisitive attitude towards life and photography. She always tries to re-invent herself, and is always patient and gentle towards people. It was a pleasure doing the photo shoots with her and I’m very keen to see her future work and how much it will be developed from here.

Families

We had a family photo shoot session with Annie at Greenwich Park in June. It was a challenge to keep two young kids and a puppy focused but Annie demonstrated great patience and professional skills. She captured the precious moments and presented a set of photos that were full of love and happiness. Annie was also very prompt to deliver the final edited version of the digital copies. We were so impressed by her professional approach and we definitely recommend Annie as a photographer.
